Wishart, Polk County, Missouri

23 Jul

Wishart was a Frisco post office on the Frisco railroad branch from Springfield to Bolivar. It was named in honor of Dr. Wishart, general passenger agent of the Frisco system.

Wishart is located on 95th Road, just off of Highway UU in Looney Township, Polk County, Missouri. It is located right in a curve so it is a little bit hard to find.

Map

The reason I am interested in the Wishart area is because a lot of ancestors lived in the area. A large portion of my maternal grandmother’s family can be found in the area around Wishart and many of my ancestors are buried in Enon Cemetery which is just down the road from Wishart. Some of the surnames I am connected to include Hook, Witt, Wilson, Copeland, Lawson and several other lines.

I visited Wishart in July 2003 and took some pictures that I would like to share. I have also included some photos of a model of Wishart that is in the Polk County History Museum in Bolivar, Missouri.

Please note there are several photos so it may take a few minutes to load them.

If you have any additional information about Wishart Missouri, please contact me, cmcaplinger@sbcglobal.net.

Thanks to William Staas, who contacted me in June 2009, I have received a little bit of further information on the identification of the buildings. William was born in Wishart in 1937 and left there in 1955.

My grandparents Forrest & A. Christina Yaryan lived there for sometime and I remember bits & pieces. They are also buried at Enon Cemetery along with two of my cousins, Stephen Russell (Rusty) Kimbrough and Christopher Yaryan. I plan to visit Wishart again the next time I head to Springfield to visit my sister.

They lived on the corner of 514th Rd and 92nd Rd – across the street from the railroad tracks.

I Lavanna Stevens, Parents Charley and Annalene Stevens, lived two miles North of Wishart, Mo. My older brothers were Jim and Howard Stevens. We were shopping a lot in Wishart. My sister Jean and I used to walk to the store in the summer just to buy a bottle of pop and candy. My family are buried at Enon Cemetery. We went there to church.
